The
Greening of the Suburbs
Greening the suburbs is about recalibrating philosophy, technology
and public policy so we champion interdependence rather than
individualism. The suburbs were defined in the 20th century
by their separation from the city, but now we need new regional
and global partnerships. Green suburbs need a new generation
of visionary regional plans. The challenge is to reduce total
energy consumption dramatically, yet create more enjoyable
and healthier communities that reconnect us to nature. |

Jon
Kaiman
Supervisor, Town of North Hempstead
Jon Kaiman, the 43 year old North Hempstead Town Supervisor, brings
to his office a distinguished record of public and private sector
accomplishments and has continued the Town’s tradition of
sound finances and good government.
Since
taking office on January 1, 2004, Jon has spearheaded a series of
bold initiatives to update the Town’s infrastructure and incorporate
modern management techniques in day-to-day operations. Central to
his efforts has been the establishment of a 311 Constituent Response
System. This new technology will provide North Hempstead residents
greater access to government, while enhancing efficiency and accountability.
As
one of the chief architects of the Town’s Environmental Legacy
Fund, Jon has continued to fight to preserve and replenish open
space and protect the Town of North Hempstead’s environment.
As Supervisor he instituted North Hempstead’s annual Earth
Day Program and Operation Clean Sweep in April 2004; a month long,
top to bottom “Spring Cleaning” of the Town. The program
has already seen the removal of over 3,000 tons of garbage and debris
in two short years. Additionally, Jon has helped push the Town towards
environmentally friendly alternatives, including the purchasing
of seven new hybrid SUV’s for the Town’s fleet of vehicles.
Another
key component in Jon’s administration is the idea of Community
Based Planning. Beginning in 2004, the Town has hosted well over
40 community meetings throughout North Hempstead to address local
concerns relating to development projects, planning decisions, park
improvements, roadway improvements and other local issues. As many
as 700 residents have attended a single meeting.
Jon
has also taken an aggressive stance on code enforcement issues and
illegal housing, partnering with the Nassau County District Attorney’s
office to more effectively prosecute violators. Through a more pro-active
code enforcement operation and additional inspectors, the Town’s
code enforcement fine revenue last year increased a record 500%
from 2003 levels.
Jon
Kaiman is a longtime resident of Great Neck, where he lives with
his wife Kim and sons Shaun and Jared and infant daughter Iyana.
Jon
received a Juris Doctorate at Hofstra Law School, and his Bachelor
of Arts at Hofstra University. In 1999, Jon was elected to Nassau
County District Court, where he received the highest rating from
the Nassau County Bar Association’s Judicial Screening Committee
two years in a row.

Chef
Chris Palmer
Maxwell and Dunne’s
The frenetic pace of a busy kitchen should come off like a well
orchestrated performance, with a certain amount of scripted moves
but just enough room to improvise in a pinch. And leading the confusing
dance of kitchen line, amidst a backdrop of flames and pressure,
there needs to be a conductor—a person who marries vision
and execution and keeps the spirit of his or her restaurant at the
forefront, but has the ability to keep remain an individual.
Chef Christopher Palmer is that leader. Somehow, brawn comes together
with the delicate touch of fine cuisine under his watch as his kitchens
continually enthrall fine food enthusiasts.
Educated at the Culinary Institute of America, Christopher Palmer
is an unforgettable chef with a sophisticated and exciting style.
He was a member of Shelley Fireman's team of Executive Chefs behind
Cafè Concepts, which owns and operates The Red Eye Grill,
The Brooklyn Diner and many other successful a la carte ventures.
Chef Palmer also honed his skills leading the kitchen of the wildly
popular Conrad's Bar and Grill of Huntington, Long Island. Prior
to living on the cutting edge of the restaurant industry in New
York, Chef Palmer began as a chef at the famed Garden City Hotel.
Today, Chef Palmer successfully combines his restaurant and banquet
background to create innovative and sophisticated restaurant and
catering menus. He has single-handedly turned the event and restaurant
world upside down on Long Island, and has received the highest praise
and recognition for his work at Maxwell & Dunne’s predecessor,
The Vanderbilt.
Chef Palmer is no stranger to the camera or microphone. He has had
numerous appearances on the Food Network’s In Food Today and
is a mainstay for many Metro NY media outlets, including, WCBS-TV,
FOX, ABC-TV, WLIW, News 12 Long Island and countless radio and print
outlets.
An imposingly big man with a booming, unmistakable voice, Chef Palmer
routinely serves to some of NY’s most influential personalities
including business moguls, television and movie stars and high-level
political figures. While he is very proud of his success in the
kitchen, Palmer believes his greatest achievement is when he and
his wife, Gena, became proud parents of twin boys, Cole and Reid.

Author, Walking with Pacence
This native Long Islander is extremely grateful to be a part of
the Green Living Expo. After hiking the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200-mile
thru-hike which runs from Georgia to Maine, completing a similar
outing along the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to
Canada, and making his way through Israel, Africa, Europe, Mexico,
Central America, Thailand and India, Pacence (the name he adopted
along the Appalachian Trail) realized something after each voyage.
In all of his discoveries around the world and within his self,
one of his most profound epiphanies was realized when he began experiencing
that we are all essentially a part of a universal oneness, living
together as one family, and nurturing ourselves within one home...planet
earth! This natural insight has been the true beginning of his Green
Living! Pacence will share stories of self-discovery, finding oneself
and how he has started living in harmony with the environment.

Light
of Mine: the new double-disc CD/DVD available now at www.jenchapin.com
Strange days indeed: these years have brought us torture, wire-tapping,
and a patriotism based on wearing lapel pins, shopping, and ignoring
the constitution. Fear (or just the fear of fear) has made our thinking
flat and closed and has perverted our national decision-making into
something unrecognizable. We resign ourselves to powerlessness and
fall into the arms of the strongman. We wait for answers to fall
out of the sky. We keep our defiance safely contained to our blog
screens.
Or
we remember to make some noise. We reclaim our own sparkling power
and responsibility, and remember to seek the truth, to protest,
to create a real future individually and collectively, and to dream.
Light
of Mine is 11 songs from the past 35 years that explore these notions
of power and fear. The band is the critically-acclaimed “Rosetta
Trio”, featuring double bassist Stephan Crump and guitarists
Jamie Fox and Liberty Ellman. The songs are: Backdrifts, by Radiohead,
American Skin (41 Shots), by Bruce Springsteen, Starman, by David
Bowie, Insatiable, by Jen Chapin, Into the Mystic, by Van Morrison,
Everybody is a Star, by Sly Stone, Born in the USA, by Bruce Springsteen,
Sunny Sunday, by Joni Mitchell, Nobody Told Me, by John Lennon,
You Haven't Done Nothin', by Stevie Wonder, Lullabye, by Jen Chapin.
The
DVD (live) performances are: Little Hours, American Skin (41 Shots),
Me Be Me, Into the Mystic, Sunny Sunday, Passive People, Manchild,
Nobody Told Me, Scream Laugh Cry, Strip it Bare, Go On, You Haven’t
Done Nothin’, I Could Fall
And
videos: Let it Show, Election Day, Backdrifts
Political
subtexts aside -- or are they front and center? -- this album is
a groovefest, a playground of spirited dialogue, passionate expression
and forward momentum.
